It’s getting to that time of year again…the warm temperatures of summer have left us and the leaves are shades of beautiful crimson, gold, and orange. The change in the season reminded me of a certain day coming up in the next few weeks… soon all the scary little ghosts, witches, vampires, and all sorts of little monsters will be out and about…
Halloween is coming!
Halloween Costumes for Dogs and Owners….what would be cuter than matching costumes?
If you’re a fellow dog owner who happens to love Halloween too, why not get Halloween costumes for both of you that will go together in a theme? You know, like Dorothy and Toto or even a pirate and a parrot. Why not have a sidekick? That’s if your dog doesn’t mind getting dressed up in a costume of course…
Of course, always be a responsible pet owner and if your dog is NOT comfortable with being dressed up, then please don’t dress him up just for the sake of being cute. It could cause a lot of problems for your pet, you, and even the little monsters tapping on your door.
Want to know more about safety for your dog during the Halloween season? You can read an earlier post of mine to find out what you can do to keep your dog safe on Halloween. Plus a few other costumes there too.
Anyways, since I love dogs and Halloween…I thought I’d share some ideas with you on what you could dress up as for Halloween that would go with your little doggie’s outfit too!
Or, if you have more than one dog like myself, I might have a few suggestions on that too…

Halloween is great for me but not for my dog. She doesn’t like dressing up and it drives her frantic being in a costume other than her own coat. She’s constantly restless and will try all ways to get herself out of it, even if it means tearing the costume into bits and pieces. Poor Lady.
Hi Cathy,
Awww, poor Lady! Some dogs just don’t like wearing anything although I’m not quite sure why.
Our four dogs don’t mind wearing costumes or clothes at all, although we don’t leave them dressed up for too long. Two or three hours at the most. I’m thinking the reason they don’t mind has a lot to do with our kids dressing them up every so often since they were pups and they just became accustomed to it.
Have you tried giving Lady a treat that she really loves when putting a costume on? That might help, especially if it’s a simple costume and easy to put on and take off. Start out with small steps, like putting the costume on, give her the treat, and take it off right away again.
If she seems to be doing okay, increase the time she has it on little by little, give praise and reward her with whatever her favorite treat is as long as she’s staying calm. Just try a minute at first and take the costume off again before she has time to get worried about it being on her. She’ll start to associate the costume with good things…attention and treats!
If all goes well, add another minute to the time it’s on. I’d try it a couple of times a day and maybe she’ll get used to it. Most importantly, start out slow and work from there…patience is always key when dealing with dogs.
Hopefully, that will help you get Lady used to wearing costumes, if it’s something you want to try…but all dogs have different personalities and some just don’t like wearing anything but their own fur.
Thanks for commenting, Cathy. I hope you and Lady have a safe and happy Halloween! 🙂
